Your pet could be a star! - Vancouver Pet Photography

Pet Model Call Vancouver Photography.jpg

Every pet owner knows their furry friend is one of a kind. Whenever people learn that I’m a commercial pet photographer, I often hear things like,“My cat would be a fantastic model for you!” or “My dog has such a unique look, they’d make the perfect model!”

The reality is, your pet is undoubtedly beautiful and deeply loved. However, there’s a distinction between having a wonderful pet and one that’s suited for modelling. I’ve noticed that many people aren’t fully aware of what sets a potential pet model apart. Pet modelling is more than just having a cute face; it requires specific traits and training. Let’s explore what makes a great pet model and whether your pet is ready to shine.

1. Temperament is Key

Brands want pets that are happy, healthy, and most importantly, relaxed. The first thing to consider is your pet’s temperament. A successful pet model needs to be calm, friendly, and adaptable. Can your pet stay relaxed in new environments, around strangers, and with other animals? In a commercial photo shoot, your pet might not always be the only one on set, so it’s important they get along with other animals. Aggression or high prey drive can be problematic. Similarly, if your pet gets scared or overly dominant around others, it’s better to avoid situations where they’ll be uncomfortable. If your pet is easily stressed or anxious, modeling might not be the best fit. Ensuring a positive experience for your pet is key—no job is worth causing them distress.

2. Training and Obedience

Modelling sessions require pets to follow directions. A reliable sit/stay command is crucial for a pet model and advanced training is a significant advantage. If your pet struggles with basic obedience, they might not be suited for commercial work. Also, consider how they handle common studio situations—flashing lights, unfamiliar sounds, and distractions. Can they stay focused, or do they get nervous or distracted? Know their strengths and limitations, and be upfront about them. And remember, never put your pet in a situation that makes them unhappy.

4. Comfort in Front of the Camera

Some pets have a great personality and are naturally photogenic, while others may need a little more practice. It’s important that your pet feels comfortable and relaxed in front of the camera. If your pet enjoys posing and doesn’t get distracted easily, they’re more likely to perform well during a shoot. Practice at home with your camera or phone to see how your pet responds to being photographed.

5. Is Pet Modeling Right for You Too?

Pet modeling can require a significant time commitment. In some cases, you’ll need to be available for casting calls, fittings, and shoots, sometimes on short notice. Consider whether you have the time and flexibility to accommodate a pet modelling career. If you’re ready for the commitment, it could be an exciting adventure for both you and your pet. Reliability is crucial in pet modelling. If you commit to a shoot, make sure you follow through—cancellations or no-shows can cause significant issues and damage your reputation. Arrive on time and be prepared. Clear communication is also vital; if you can’t make it or need to change plans, let the team know as soon as possible. Your pet’s career depends on your professionalism.

Our models enjoy the excitement of photo shoots and love working for praise and treats. Plus, there’s nothing like seeing your pet featured in a campaign. If you think your pet would enjoy modelling, we’d be thrilled to have you apply in the form bellow.

*IMPORTANT:

  • By submitting the form, you agree to receive emails from Vancouver Pet Photography with updates on model calls, promotions, and news. You can unsubscribe at any time if you prefer not to receive these emails, but please note that you may miss out on future modeling opportunities.

  • As I’m based in Vancouver, your pet must be living in, or willing to travel to, the Greater Vancouver area.

  • Please note filling out the form won’t guarantee your pet will be selected. Brands usually have their own requirements for breeds, age, colour, personality etc.

  • Don’t Expect Access to All Photos: Brands carefully manage their images to protect their identity and marketing strategies. After a shoot, they might only choose a few images, and you likely won’t get access to the rest. Companies want to ensure that only the best, fully edited photos representing their brand are seen. It’s rare to receive additional photos unless you’re working with smaller businesses.

  • I’m NOT a pet modelling agency. This application is for my personal and commercial jobs only. If you’re seeking professional representation, look for reputable pet modelling agencies that can help you navigate the industry. These agencies can connect you with opportunities and ensure your pet’s safety and well-being are prioritized.

  • To catch the eye of pet modeling agencies or casting directors, you’ll need a portfolio of high-quality photos. Start by taking clear, well-lit pictures that showcase your pet’s personality and physical features. Try different angles, settings, and outfits to highlight their versatility. If photography isn’t your forte, I can definitely help you to create a standout portfolio, learn more about my sessions here
